Cefic’s Methacrylate Sector Group (MSG) is engaging again with relevant stakeholders to see which options remain to avoid a classification of Methyl methacrylate (MMA) as respiratory sensitizer category 1. The aim is to convince the authorities to do another thorough and independent review of the case even if this is an uphill battle. Cefic had organized two internal strategic workshops with MSG earlier this year to focus on the case.

To strengthen the position of the Methacrylates Sector Group (MSG) on its commitment to ensure health and safety of workers and protecting them from harmful levels of exposure to MMA at workplace a position paper has been published. This position paper stresses that the current evidence presented by RAC has a number of gaps and inconsistencies that need to be addressed before finalization of the decision-making process. See the position paper on our website.

The classification of MMA had been proposed by ECHA’s Risk assessment committee (RAC) in two calls in October 2020 and March 2021. The original proposal was made by France on 26 February 2019.
